2024X (formerly Twitter) operates one of the world's most widely used social APIs. Its Developer Platform powers millions of third-party integrations—from social listening tools and analytics platforms to bots, apps, and enterprise data pipelines built on top of real-time conversation.
When the company rebranded from Twitter to X, the Developer Relations and Partner Engineering team used it as an opportunity to modernize their documentation from the ground up.
The previous setup was built on Adobe Experience Manager (AEM), an enterprise CMS that proved ill-suited for fast-moving API documentation. Updates were manual and error-prone, search was poor, developers had to leave the docs to test endpoints in Postman, and reorganizing content during the rebrand was painful. X needed a platform that could keep up.
What X built
X's Mintlify deployment lives at docs.x.com: a clean, modern API reference covering the full X API surface. The docs include:
- API reference — complete endpoint documentation for the X API v2
- Quickstart guides — onboarding flows for new developer partners
- Code samples — maintained by the Partner Engineering team
- Automated updates — documentation synced from API specifications via a CI/CD pipeline
- Built-in API playground — developers test endpoints directly in the docs, no Postman required
Why X chose Mintlify
X evaluated Mintlify against the needs of their Partner Engineering and DevRel teams, who own and maintain the documentation. The decision came down to five things:
- Markdown-native — converted the existing Twitter API docs to rendered documentation quickly, without a heavy migration lift
- Built-in API playground — eliminated the Postman dependency by letting developers test endpoints inline
- Spec-based automation — documentation stays in sync with the API automatically through CI/CD, removing manual overhead
- Search — out-of-the-box search dramatically improved developer navigation
- Modern styling — a clean, polished layout that matches X's brand and communicates technical credibility
"Our previous documentation system was manual and difficult to maintain. When we rebranded to X, we needed something modern that could keep up with our API."
— Taylor Caldwell, Partner Engineering, X
